In 2004, The DNC held an ad contest. Veteran commercial producer Adam Klugman and Oregon State Representative Jefferson Smith collaborated to create "America's Party" - a first ever attempt to brand the Democratic Party with a television commercial. "America's Party" won the DNC contest and was played on the 2004 convention floor. In spite of an overwhelmingly positive response and an off-the-charts dial test performed by Frank Luntz, the party demonstrated no interest in the ready-to-air 60 second commercial.
Republican Pollster Frank Luntz saw the spot at the 2004 DNC Convention and asked for a copy so he could test it. He called Adam Klugman a week later and said that he had never tested a spot that performed as well with both Republicans and Democrats. As you will see when you watch it, the score reaches 90 out of 100 with Democrats and as high as 80 with Republicans. Luntz is described the result as "nearly impossible." Still, no response from the party.
Adam Klugman and Dave Adams produced this simple spot to and entered it into MoveOn.org first-ever contest of its kind. Out of tens of thousands of entries, "Bankrupt" was a top ten finalist. As part of the award, Klugman and Adams were flown to New York City by MoveOn to attend the finalist awards ceremony.
